Libyagate: Pear shaped

Mr Cameron’s few days to “get Gaddafi” are up. Now the UK has vested interests it is time to stop breaching international laws and pull out before it turns into “Iraq – the sequel”. The UN whispered stop.

Libya never did what Cameron accused it of. Can he say why the savage attack  and desperate assassination attempts continue?

Mr Blair could end up in  jail if there is any justice left in the world.

Financial Heist of the Century: Confiscating Libya's Sovereign Wealth Funds (SWF) Manlio Dinucci
Global Research, Il Manifesto (translated from Italian) - 2011-04-22
[...] Libya, after Washington removed it from the blacklist of “rogue states,” has sought to carve out a space at the international level focusing on "diplomacy of sovereign wealth funds." Once the U.S. and the EU lifted the embargo in 2004 and the big oil companies returned to the country, Tripoli was able to maintain a trade surplus of about $30 billion per year which was used largely to make foreign investments. The management of sovereign funds has however created a new mechanism of power and corruption in the hands of ministers and senior officials, which probably in part escaped the control of the Gadhafi himself: This is confirmed by the fact that, in 2009, he proposed that the 30 billion in oil revenues go "directly to the Libyan people." This aggravated the fractures within the Libyan government.
U.S. and European ruling circles focused on these funds, so that before carrying out a military attack on Libya to get their hands on its energy wealth, they took over the Libyan sovereign wealth funds. Facilitating this operation is the representative of the Libyan Investment Authority, Mohamed Layas himself: as revealed in a cable published by WikiLeaks. On January 20 Layas informed the U.S. ambassador in Tripoli that LIA had deposited $32 billion in U.S. banks. Five weeks later, on February 28, the U.S. Treasury “froze” these accounts. According to official statements, this is "the largest sum ever blocked in the United States," which Washington held "in trust for the future of Libya." It will in fact serve as an injection of capital into the U.S. economy, which is more and more in debt. A few days later, the EU "froze" around 45 billion Euros of Libyan funds.
The assault on the Libyan sovereign wealth funds will have a particularly strong impact in Africa. There, the Libyan Arab African Investment Company had invested in over 25 countries, 22 of them in sub-Saharan Africa, and was planning to increase the investments over the next five years, especially in mining, manufacturing, tourism and telecommunications. The Libyan investments have been crucial in the implementation of the first telecommunications satellite Rascom (Regional African Satellite Communications Organization), which entered into orbit in August 2010, allowing African countries to begin to become independent from the U.S. and European satellite networks, with an annual savings of hundreds of millions of dollars.  /full story

The Ground War has Commenced: NATO Establishes a "Joint Operation Room" with the Libyan Rebels Manilo Dinucci
Global Research, Il Manifesto (translated from Italian) April 19
[...] In a press conference in Bengazi on Saturday, April 16, Ghoga also stated that "NATO forces and the Libyan rebels established a joint operations room” to coordinate ground operations with air strikes conducted by NATO.

Libya ripe for jihad’s rallying cries
The Australian
As the military and humanitarian quagmire in Libya deepens, a clarion call has gone out to followers of the global jihadist movement in the West.
“Who wants to join the mujahidin? The gates of jihad are open in Libya!” declares a message posted on a pro al-Qa’ida internet forum monitored by Western analysts.
[...]  “Senior leadership figures, including Ayman al-Zawahiri, have given a number of sermons concentrating almost solely on Libya and portraying it as the most fertile ground for their global movement,” says the report’s author, Alexander Meleagrou-Hitchens, a research fellow at ICSR. He says Zawahiri’s call has been echoed on English-language jihadist forums.
“The Western Salafi-jihadi movement is attempting to take ownership of the rebellion on behalf of the global jihad, and is portraying anti-Gaddafi forces as mujahidin, while also encouraging Western Muslims to do all they can to reach the country and take part in a supposed jihad.”
[...] The forums are full of news of the exploits of jihadist fighters who have joined “Islamic battalions” in Libya under names such as the Thunderbolt Battalion and the Islamic Army of Benghazi, and so-called exclusive pictures of fighters purporting to be mujahidin on the front lines, accompanied by messages urging new recruits to join them. They provide directions on how best to travel to Libya, along with this incentive: “The market of paradise has opened and the hoor al ayn [virgins promised to martyrs] are waiting.”

Muslim Brotherhood leader: Our objective is to establish an Islamic state
Jihad Watch
And not just in Egypt. Jihad Watch reader Coptic, who sent in this story, writes: “Please note that the translation the newspaper did is very very deceitful. El Shater actually said to control the world, and take over the world, but the newspaper translated it ‘to become world leaders.’”) Arabic text here.”Brotherhood leader: Preparing for an Islamic government,” from Almasry Alyoum, April 23 (thanks to Coptic)
The role of the Muslim Brotherhood is to mobilize the nation to establish a way of life based on Islam, said its Deputy Supreme Guide Khairat al-Shater.
Speaking at a conference in Alexandria two days ago, Shater further said that the group is preparing to initiate an Islamic government to achieve progress based on Islamic principles, and that its objective is to establish an Islamic state and become world leaders.
Pointing out that no Sunni state currently has a regime with Islamic references, he urged Muslim scholars to contribute an workable, comprehensive, civilized Islamic model….

McCain-Hillary in 2009: Libya is “An Important Ally in the War on Terrorism”, Gaddafi is “a Peacemaker in Africa” Global Research
Just twenty months later, in Benghazi, Senator McCain met with Mustafa Abdul Jalil and other former chiefs of the Libyan government, who now seek to overthrow Qadhafi. But something has not changed: the real purpose of McCain.
The Senator is supporter of big U.S. oil companies: ExxonMobil, Chevron, ConocoPhillips, and others. Only in the Senator’s election campaign they made “donations” of millions of dollars. In return, McCain supported their request to increase offshore drilling and proposed to reduce taxes on oil companies, making them earn billions of dollars. Funds given by Chevron were used to establish the International Republican Institute, whose chairman is McCain, with the mission of «promoting democracy», in fact paving the way for U.S. companies in oil-rich countries. So far, especially in Iraq, whose invasion was strongly sponsored by McCain in 2003. Same story and same stake today in Libya.

Update on the failed assassination attempt: 3 bystanders killed
AP via Guardian
NATO airstrikes target the center of Moammar Gadhafi’s seat of power, unleashing guided bombs that destroy a multistory library and office in his compound and badly damage a reception hall for visiting dignitaries. A government official says three people were killed and 45 injured. Gadhafi’s whereabouts at the time of the attack on his sprawling Bab al-Aziziya compound were unclear, but a spokesman says he is not in hiding and is in “high spirits.”
Meanwhile, Gadhafi’s troops on the outskirts of Misrata unleash more shells into the last major rebel city in western Libya, killing 10 people, including an entire family, a doctor says.

US, Russian and Chinese Weapons: Both of Libya’s fighting camps are taking delivery of weapons shipments Global Research
[...] Thursday, April 21, President Barack Obama authorized a pair of armed Predator drones to help the rebels break breaking the siege of Misratah, while British, French and Italian military officers headed for rebel headquarters in Benghazi, part of a package of arms and military equipment from the US, Britain, France, Italy and Qatar.
On the other side of the Libyan divide, China, Russia, Ukraine, Belarus and Serbia are keeping the pro-Qaddafi camp’s arsenals stocked with new hardware along with combat personnel from Eastern Europe and the former Yugoslavia.

[...] As for the three cluster bombs read this by Craig Murray.  Our ex-ambassador to Uzbekistan, who ‘outed’ the most grotesque torture of devout Muslims for ‘intelligence’ which flowed to Langley and thence to MI6, records how the US has the largest stocks of cluster bombs and that it has resisted  joining the cluster bomb ban.  The UK, with its usual treachery, has signed but agrees to hold stocks for the US on this sceptred isle. The use of thousands by ‘Israel’ on the Lebanese people in 2006 is not recalled  by the UK media. Link
[...] The State Broadcaster has been very selective in its news dissemination.  Aware that our premier liar has promised ‘no boots on the ground’, it has been careful to maintain that illusion.  There has been no national news of ‘deployment’.  (They are good on sanitary words – ‘ in theatre’, ‘operational tasking’  These are fragments of the public school lexicon of killing.)  But here, in the South West of England, BBC Southwest has been spilling the beans.  It reckons that almost every local will know warships have been embarking Royal Marines in Plymouth.  However, we were told they were going in case ‘humanitarian help’ was needed in Libya and, rather darkly, for the possible evacuation of UK citizens from other Middle Eastern countries in event of disturbance or similar.  The video showed troops loading humanitarian rocket launchers.
