Turkey Headed Toward Civil War
Sputnik 20.12.2015

Dozens of Kurdish fighters and several Turkish soldiers have lost their lives in bloody clashes in Turkey’s southeast this week, and the shadow of civil war is increasingly seen day by day.

Increasingly, signs that ongoing clashes between Turkish security forces and Kurdish fighters may soon turn into a full-scale civil war, with much of the Kurdish population involved, have caused deep concern.
Ankara’s hardline politicians and Turkish nationalists across the country are pouring oil onto the flames with violent rhetoric.
“The operations carried out by the Turkish Armed Forces, gendarmerie and police will continue in the region in a steadfast manner until public security is established,” a recent statement by Turkey’s General Staff reads.Over a hundred fighters from the notorious Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) have been killed in action in the south-east province of Sirnak this week, according to Turkish media. In a full-scale military operation launched on Tuesday, two government soldiers were killed while 23 others, including members of the police, were injured.

This course of events is what many have been warning against.

“When we see these moves, we will know that Pandora’s Box has been opened and we can expect that both sides are heading to a level of violence that could become a civil war,” Metin Gurcan, a Turkish analyst, wrote for Al Monitor earlier this week.
Before the “anti-PKK” operation, as the Turks call their military actions in Cizre, Silopi, and other spots, both PKK and the government forces had been telling civilians to leave the area or go into hiding. Now, peace in this part of the Middle East looks a lot like war.
“Semsettin, 45, said his family in Silopi woke up on Wednesday to the sound of gunfire and went down to their basement to hide,” BBC reported on Thursday. “As their house is the only one in the area with a basement, 25 neighbors have joined them in the 3-4 square meter room. ‘There is no electricity, it’s cold and the children are suffering. There is no baby food or milk,’ he says.”

After two days of military operations in the area, Turkey’s Interior Minister Efkan Ala stated that the military and police had seized tons of explosives and thousands of weapons from Kurds, according to Anadolu Agency.“Security forces seized 2,240 weapons, 862 of which were heavy and long-barreled weapons, almost 10 tons of explosives and some 10,000 Molotov cocktails,” the minister specified.Kurdish rebels reportedly have not only dug trenches and built barricades in urban areas, but also modified their combat strategy to be effective against well-equipped government military forces.“In the past, veteran PKK fighters reinforced young urban fighters by using a strategy of ‘come-coordinate-depart,’ but now the strategy has become ‘come-stay-direct,’ Metin Gurcan of Al Monitor explained. “If these hybrid forces of veteran PKK fighters and young YDG-H militants in cities are equipped with advanced anti-tank missiles such as Milan, Kornet and TOW and shoulder-fired ground-to-air missiles that could change the entire nature of the anticipated clashes.”

The regulation of financial activities in Kurdish-dominated areas was reportedly taken over by the PKK in advance, in expectation of a long conflict.

Experts point out that a full-scale war with increased civilian casualties – or, as NATO is used to cynically label it: “collateral damage” — is likely to lead to a civil war over the large areas of Turkey that have a Kurdish majority. Kurds account for some 20% of the total population of Turkey.
Around 10,000 troops and police officers are involved in a nationwide military operation tasked with putting down a recent Kurdish Workers Party (PKK) independence insurgency.
The PKK waged two long, violent and unsuccessful struggles for independence against Turkey, in which 5,000 Turkish troops and more than 40,000 Kurds were killed between 1984-1999 and 2004-2012.
A total of 180 police, military and civilians have died in PKK attacks following terrorist acts, claimed by the Islamic State (Daesh in Arabic), that killed 33 Kurdish activists in July and the murder of two police officers claimed by the PKK.
Turkey has stepped up its air campaign against PKK targets in southeastern Turkey and northern Iraq.

This will be interesting. The armed forces employ a lot of Kurds. Erdogan is friendly with Israel's pet Iraqi Kurds.
One wonders how the expert genocidalist NATO will approach the objective of decimation in a NATO member state.

Drone Registration, Merkel to Reduce Refugees, Riyadh's 'Anti-Terror' Bloc
Context Countdown 18.12.2015
Andrew Korybko
We start off this week by talking about the ‘terrorist threats’ that prompted the closing of the entire LA school district, but which were really one big hoax.
After that, we discuss the neck-and-neck competition between Ted Cruz and Marco Rubio, as the two presidential candidates wrestle with one another for the number two spot in the Republican primaries.
Keeping with the focus on the US, the next section addresses the government’s official decree that all drones operating within the country be registered by next month.
Switching gears and moving more international, we then tackle German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s surprising about-face in pledging to reduce the number of ‘refugees’ entering the country. Our final topic of the show is how Saudi Arabia, out of all the countries in the world, is now leading its own ‘anti-terrorist’ coalition.

Inconvenient Truth: Leaked Report Proves Daesh Smuggling Oil to Turkey

Sputnik 20.12.2015
A report compiled by an independent Norwegian oil and gas consulting firm verified earlier claims that Daesh, also known as ISIL/ISIS, smuggles most of its oil to Turkey, where it is then sold on the black market at reduced prices.
After the request of the Norwegian Foreign Ministry the petroleum consulting firm Rystad Energy came up with the report back in July, using its own database and sources in the region. The Norwegian daily Klassekampen got its hands on it and leaked the details of the report on Sunday.
"Large amounts of oil have been smuggled across the border to Turkey from IS-controlled areas in Syria and Iraq… Oil is sent by tankers via smuggling routes across the border [and] is sold at greatly reduced prices, from $25 to $45 a barrel," the report said, as cited by the Norwegian daily.

Could There Be British Forces Assisting the Saudi-Led Coalition in Yemen?
Sputnik 18.12.2015
Questions have been raised about whether UK defense personnel have been involved in the internationally condemned Saudi Arabian-led military campaign in Yemen, following the release of UK documents detailing the number of British officers "embedded" with other nations' armed forces.
Following a Freedom of Information (FoI) request lodged by human rights activist group Reprieve, UK Defense Secretary Michael Fallon released figures showing how many British officers and HQ staff were embedded with the military forces of allies.
The figures revealed that as of November 30, 2015, there were 147 defense personnel embedded in the military headquarters of another nations, while an additional 30 embedded exchange officers were working with the armed forces of allies such as the US, France, Canada and Australia.
According to the list, Britain had the greatest involvement within US forces, with a total of 30 personnel embedded with American operations or headquarters.
David Cameron Facing Internal Backlash Over UK Support of Saudis in Yemen
The request was triggered after it was revealed earlier this year that British pilots had been taking part in bombing Daesh, also known as ISIL, targets while being "embedded" with US forces, despite the UK at the time not having been granted the parliamentary right to carry out the bombings.

UN Yemen Ceasefire Deal Falls Apart Before Peace Talks - Houthi Member

Sputnik 20.12.2015
The United Nations has failed to stop the conflict in Yemen for the peace talks’ period as the truce fell apart before it started, a member of the political bureau of the Shiite Houthi movement, also known as Ansar Allah, told Sputnik.
CAIRO (Sputnik) — On Tuesday, a seven-day ceasefire between the Saudi-led coalition and the Houthis was enforced for the time of the intra-Yemeni talks in Geneva, which were expected to continue until Monday.
However, on Friday the truce was broken by both sides as forces loyal to President Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi launched an offensive and the Houthis fired ballistic missiles on the territory of Saudi Arabia.
"The United Nations lacked powers to stop the war. The truce has not had time to plainly start and has already collapsed. On the same day, when the negotiations began, the Arab coalition’s warplanes launched airstrikes on some areas in Yemen, and still no real truce has begun," Ali Kahum said in a phone conversation.
According to him, the Houthi militants have to defend themselves, and the bombing is still ongoing.

Neocons and Assad Haters Outraged: Obama 'Accepts Russia's Stance' on Syria

Sputnik 20.12.2015
President Barack Obama appears to have finally abandoned the Assad must go stance and agreed that the Syrians are the ones who can and will decide the future of their country – something Russia has long advocated, investigative journalist Robert Parry asserted.
Although this is a positive development for Syria, US hardliners and their Middle Eastern allies, who tried to push through a "regime change" scenario in Syria, are not happy about it.
"Obama finally ceded to the more democratically defensible position that the Syrian people should pick their own leaders. After all, if Obama is right about how much the Syrian people hate Assad, elections would empower them to implement their own 'regime change' through the ballot box," the analyst observed. "But that uncertain outcome is not what the [neocons] want. They want a predetermined result – Assad's ouster – regardless of the Syrian people's wishes."
Parry's opinion piece came in response to a Washington Post editorial, chastising the Obama administration for what they see as an about-face following four years of a (failed) "Assad-must-go" strategy.
A Matter of True Intentions: This is Why Washington Does Not Want to Send Troops to Syria
"The more immediate issue is the Post's fury over the prospect that the Syrian people would be allowed to vote on Assad's future rather than have it dictated by neocon think tanks, Islamic jihadist rebels and their Turkish-Saudi-Qatari-Israeli-CIA backers," the journalist noted.
For the Washington Post, democratic elections in Syria are "a likely recipe for an impasse." The United Nations Security Council does not see it this way.

Fears of civil war in Syria after peace plan is vetoed.

"The West condemns Russia and China for blocking UN move to increase pressure on Assad to stand down.

Western and Arab governments and opposition activists yesterday scrambled to forge a new plan to stem the bloodshed in Syria after Russia and China's veto of a UN resolution sparked outrage and warnings that the move could tip the country into civil war.

The veto on Saturday meant Moscow and Beijing would be "held responsible" for further violence in Syria, said the Foreign Secretary, William Hague, describing President Bashar al-Assad's government as a "murdering regime".

The US Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton, said "a travesty" had occurred at the UN in New York, warning that chances for "a brutal civil war" would increase as Syrians under attack from their government move to defend themselves. With the United Nations now hobbled after failing to endorse the Arab League plan urging President Assad to cede power and to halt a crackdown reported to have killed thousands, Ms Clinton pressed for more action by "friends of a democratic Syria"."

Lebanese militant leader killed in Syria, Israeli airstrike and terror attack suspected
RT 20 Dec, 2015
Hezbollah leader Samir Kuntar, of the Palestine Liberation Front, has reportedly been killed in a “terror attack” in Damascus, Syrian state TV said, citing official sources. Hezbollah earlier backed reports that he had been killed in an alleged Israeli airstrike.
Kuntar was reportedly killed in the district of Jermana in the Syrian capital, Syrian TV added.
Damascus radio station Sham FM has reported that Kuntar’s body was recovered from under the wreckage of the building.
Images from the scene show a collapsed multi-storey residential building, with lots of rubble on the ground. Vehicles parked nearby appear to have been completely destroyed.
Rescue workers have been trying to pull out survivors from under the rubble, according to the footage.

RT 20 Dec, 2015
As in the Soviet Union, in the European Union the nation state is subordinate to the Union. If the USSR was an ‘evil empire’, then what is the EU?
Cameron was in Brussels for the recent summit.
For better of worse, this is the man the British people believe directs their government. And he was in Brussels to ask the EU if he could do some governing.
The answer – in short – was no.
So why stay in the EU?
To hear those the mainstream media refers to as our leaders talk about the EU one would think that leaving it implied national suicide. Cameron himself is hyperbolic on the question of the need for Britain’s inclusion.
The numbers do not agree.
The Daily Mail ran a piece recently on Norway which it described as: “prosperous, happy and free. Its countryside is neat and well husbanded, its towns and cities orderly and comfortable. Its people shame much of Europe by their command of foreign languages, and it runs its own affairs, trading cheerfully with the EU.
In the 30 years from 1971 to 2001, its gross domestic product rose by 177 per cent. Denmark, which has been in the EU for much of that period, increased its GDP by 75 per cent and the UK, which has been in the EU almost the whole period, saw an increase of 98 per cent.
This suggests, at least, that non-membership has not held Norway back.”
Switzerland, likewise, is safe, stable and rich. And, like Norway, it is not an EU member.
The fact is that countries can do very nicely outside the EU.
What is less clear is how well they can do within it.
A project forced through by stealth
The EU is a lesson in deceit.

65,000 jihadists in Syria ready to replace ISIS if it's defeated – report

RT 20 Dec, 2015
The West is making a strategic mistake by focusing its anti-terrorist effort on Islamic State (IS. previously ISIS/ISIL) and overlooking other groups, an upcoming report claims. Sixty percent of fighters in the country can be classified as Islamists and have goals similar to IS.
Those fighters belong to at least 15 other militant groups, which are mostly being ignored by the West, British media cited the Centre on Religion & Geopolitics, a think-tank run by the Tony Blair Faith Foundation, as saying.
Fewer than one quarter of the groups surveyed by the center had no ideological agenda, but many of them were willing to fight alongside the Islamists and accept their leadership in a post-war Syria.

Missile attack kills at least 180 Saudi-led troops

Press TV Dec 19, 2015
At least 180 Saudi-led troops are killed after Yemen's army fires a ballistic missile at a military base in retaliation for heavy bombing and capture of two Yemeni towns despite a ceasefire.
The army, backed by Houthi fighters, launched a Tochka ballistic missile at the military camp in Yemen’s west-central province of Ma’rib Friday afternoon, the Arabic-language al-Masirah news website reported.
The fatalities include a number of Saudi officers and military personnel, it said. The website had earlier put the toll at 120.
A military source said Yemeni forces had also fired two Qaher 1 ballistic missiles at the Najran region in southwestern Saudi Arabia. The counterattacks, the source said, came after Saudi Arabia's violation of the ceasefire.
Since the truce came into effect on Tuesday, the kingdom has escalated its heavy bombing of Yemen and forces loyal to pro-Saudi Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi have overrun two towns.
According to a Yemeni army spokesman, Saudi warplanes have conducted more than 300 airstrikes against Yemen ever since the ceasefire.
On Friday, Saudi aircraft bombed a residential building in the northwestern province of Sa’ada, killing 23 people, including a four-member family and medical staff, Yemen’s official Saba Net news agency said.

Israel military fires artillery into Lebanon
Press TV Dec 20, 2015
The Israeli regime’s military forces have fired artillery into Lebanon, one day after killing a veteran fighter of the Hebzollah resistance movement in Syria.
The Israeli military claimed that the artillery fire came in response to the firing of three Katyusha rockets from Lebanon earlier on Sunday.
Hezbollah senior fighter Samir Qantar was killed in an Israeli airstrike in the Syrian capital, Damascus, on Saturday night.
The Israeli army said in a statement that it has "responded" to the Lebanese rocket with "targeted artillery fire."
Lebanon's national news agency NNA reported that Israel fired nine rounds of artillery at the south.
Qantar was released from an Israeli prison during a prisoner swap between Hezbollah and Israel in 2008 after serving 29 years in detention.

Dead, Disabled, Displaced or Destroyed – Democracy Delivered

Activist Post December 10, 2015
By Graham Vanbergen
Six months ago, the Washington DC-based Physicians for Social Responsibility (PRS) released a landmark study over the death toll from 10 years of the “War on Terror” since the 9/11 attacks. It was largely ignored by the world’s press.
The 97-page report accompanied by hundreds of studies, reports and investigations by the Nobel Peace Prize-winning doctors’ group is the first to tally up the total number of civilian casualties from US-UK led interventions in Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan. This article uses much of the content from that report called the IPPNW Body Count publication.
A poll carried out by the Associated Press (AP) two years ago found that, on average, U.S. citizens believe that only 9,900 Iraqis were killed during the 2003-2011 occupation of Iraq by the US, UK and allied forces.
Random spot checks have suggested that more than two-thirds of all violent deaths that occurred in Baghdad between 2003 and 2007 did not appear in the media, and were therefore not included in official statistics distributed by the Iraq Body Count (IBC). The IBC has a media-centered approach to counting and documenting the deaths and is considered very unreliable as a result but is much quoted by the establishment and mainstream press the world over.
For instance, evidence of the 27,000 bombs that were dropped in just the first year during the invasion of Iraqi cities is practically non-existent in the IBC database.
In many cases, the occupying powers explicitly blocked journalists from investigating instances where the British or American forces were accused of mass killings. Numerous journalists in Iraq who tried to report on the activities of the occupation troops and their consequences were killed or arrested.

This is How Much Big Business Paid US Senators to Fast-Track the TPP Deal

Activist Post December 5, 2015
By Alex Pietrowski
Debate around the controversial Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) continues to mount. The recently-released 6,000 page agreement, encompassing 18,000 categories of goods and services and a region that accounts for 40 percent of the global economy, hasn’t been ratified by the U.S. Congress or Senate. Yet, the U.S. President has made his support clear with statements such as, “We are both soon to be signatories to the TPP agreement,” a comment Obama made on Nov. 19, 2015, after his bilateral meeting with new Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
Barack Obama’s confidence stems partially from the Trade Promotion Authority fast-tracking bill, which passed the U.S. Senate in May 2015, with a vote of 65-33. What has led to such strong support of the agreement?
Part is the work of U.S. Trade Representative Michael Froman, who is one of the biggest supporters of the TPP on Capitol Hill. He’s been very effective in selling U.S. Senators on the pretense that the TPP will economically benefit the U.S., although many believe that the benefits really fall to U.S. corporations and not the country’s citizens.
Just to make sure corporations extract every pound of flesh, any public law interpreted by corporations as impeding projected profit, even a law designed to protect the environment or consumers, will be subject to challenge in an entity called the investor-state dispute settlement (ISDS) section. The ISDS, bolstered and expanded under the TPP, will see corporations paid massive sums in compensation from offending governments for impeding their “right” to further swell their bank accounts. Corporate profit effectively will replace the common good. ~ Chris Hedges, Truthdig (source)
Aside from the debate over what the TPP will actually accomplish, corporate payoffs to U.S. Senators played an important role in the fast-track bill, as they do with most U.S. political matters. Looking at the money trail, it once again becomes clear that U.S. corporations are running the U.S. government, with little regard to the people’s interests. Here’s what the corporate cash spigot looks like:
Using data from the Federal Election Commission, this chart shows all donations that corporate members of the US Business Coalition for TPP made to US Senate campaigns between January and March 2015, when fast-tracking the TPP was being debated in the Senate:
Out of the total $1,148,971 given, an average of $17,676.48 was donated to each of the 65 “yea” votes.
The average Republican member received $19,673.28 from corporate TPP supporters.
The average Democrat received $9,689.23 from those same donors.
