TIME Admits ISIS Bringing Arms, Fighters in From NATO Territory

12 July 2015 by Tony Cartalucci

Late last year, Germany’s broadcaster Deutsche Welle (DW) investigated what turned out to be hundreds of trucks a day carrying billions of dollars in supplies, flowing across the Turkish border into Syria and directly into the hands of the so-called “Islamic State” (ISIS).
The border crossing near the Turkish city of Oncupinar, approximately 100km west of the Syrian city of Kobani, is apparently only one of many such crossings where ISIS fighters, weapons, and materiel move directly under the watch and apparent assistance of NATO.
TIME in their recent article titled, “ISIS Fighters Kill 200 Civilians in Syrian Town,” reported that:

The attacks also came after the group [ISIS] suffered a series of setbacks over the past two weeks, including the loss last week of the Syrian border town of Tal Abyad — one of the group’s main points for bringing in foreign fighters and supplies.

Tal Abyad, a Turkish-Syrian border crossing east of Kobani, is now a second, confirmed point of entry into Syria used by ISIS to supply its ongoing campaign within the country.
Reports of confirmed, extensive logistical networks passing through NATO and US-ally territory, into Syria, contradict the current prevailing narrative that ISIS is an “indigenous” terrorist organization, funded and self-sustaining within the territory it currently holds in both Syria and Iraq. The Western media has attempted to claim with little evidence that ISIS’ immense, global operations are somehow underwritten by “ransom payments” and “black market oil” it has seized in eastern Syria.
Clearly, not only are these reports as untenable as they are untrue, the Western media itself has reported precisely how ISIS has been sustaining its impressive fighting capacity – with billions of dollars of state-sponsored aid flowing through NATO territory, directly to their front lines.

Were the supplies flowing over the Syrian-Iraqi border, it may be possible to argue plausible deniability – with the governments of either nation unable to control either side of the border. However, Turkey, a NATO member since 1952 and host of the United States Air Force’s Incirlik Air Base, has full control of its borders meaning that ISIS-bound convoys not only pass over its borders with the apparent approval of Turkish border guards, but are assembled somewhere within Turkey itself before arriving at the edge of Syrian territory.

No effort has been made to stem the flow of supplies to ISIS from NATO territory, with the Turkish government officially denying the trucks DW videotaped and reported on even exist. This indicates clear NATO complicity in the arming and supplying of ISIS and other Al Qaeda affiliates who are in fact invading Syria from NATO-territory, as well as from US-ally Jordan.
For the West, which feigns indignation in the wake of recent ISIS attacks on France, Tunisia, and Kuwait, while posing as the primary force engaged in war with ISIS directly, it would be a simple matter to close the Turkish-Syrian border with NATO troops to ensure ISIS was shut off completely from the supplies it depends on to maintain its fighting capacity. That the borders are intentionally left open for this extensive daily torrent of supplies, weapons, and fighters to pass over unopposed, is proof positive that ISIS is and has been from the beginning a proxy force intentionally created to stoke fear and support at home for unending war abroad. [My emphasis Cc]

Without the threat of ISIS and the chaos it is creating across the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, the ability for the West to wage war on its enemies and justify extraterritorial meddling would be severely limited. In fact, the very ISIS forces clearly being armed and supplied by NATO directly, are being used as a pretext by US policymakers to execute recently laid plans to incrementally invade and occupy Syria with US military forces.
The Brookings Institute from which these plans originated, recently used an ISIS assault on Kobani to call for “US boots on the ground” in Syria, an assault which would have been logistically impossible were it not for the daily torrent of supplies the US and its NATO-ally Turkey have themselves intentionally enabled for years to cross into Syria.

To defeat ISIS, its supply lines must be cut – a simple matter to perform that requires only Turkish and other NATO troops to move in and disrupt overt ISIS logistical networks running within their own territory. Instead, the US State Department and US-operated NGOs have even gone as far as condemning what little attempts have been made to control Turkey’s border with Syria. The US State Department’s Voice of America in their article, “Turkish Border Crackdown Imperils Syrian Refugees,” used the pretext of “human rights” to condemn Turkey for what meager control measures it has attempted to put in place.
The fact that the US, with a military base in Turkey itself, has elected not to call for or attempt to implement stricter border security to stem the flow of ISIS supplies, and instead has gone as far as bombing Syrian territory in feigned efforts to “fight ISIS,” proves that the terrorist organization is both a proxy and a pretext. No serious military campaign would be launched against an enemy without identifying and cutting off its supply lines, especially when those supply lines run through that military’s own territory.

The general public across the West, if they truly desire an end to ISIS and its atrocities, will demand what least the West can do – shutting the borders of Turkey and Jordan and ending the flow of supplies to ISIS. This will never happen, thanks to both elementary but effective “divide and conquer” rhetoric miring the Western public in endless circular debate, and the fact that the average Westerner’s understanding of modern warfare and military logistics is derived from Hollywood and television, not maps, history, and basic knowledge.

Burundi army says killed 31, captured 171 gunmen in north
Mon Jul 13, 2015
Burundi's military forces have killed 31 armed men and captured 171 others in clashes north of the East African nation, the army has announced.
According to a Monday announcement by the army's spokesman, Colonel Gaspard Baratuza, the clashes took place late last week in Kayanza province during which six government soldiers were injured. He added that the nation’s military is probing the incident to find the identity of the armed men.
The development came as local observers reportedly consider the battle as a precursor to an emerging insurgency in the impoverished nation by a section of the army that backed a failed coup attempt against President Pierre Nkurunziza back in May.
The developments came after Nkurunziza announced on Saturday the postponement of the country’s upcoming presidential elections from July 15 to July 21 under apparent international pressure to put them off as long as violent protest rallies against his controversial bid to seek a third term in office persist.

Destroying Syria to Make It Safe for American Values
By Eric Margolis
Global Research, July 13, 2015
EricMargolis.com 12 July 2015
“The Turks have passed by here; all is in ruins and mourning. “
So wrote France’s great writer, Victor Hugo, of the horrors he had witnessed during the Balkan liberation wars of the 1880’s. If Hugo were alive today, he might well have used the same haunting lines to describe the smoking wreckage of the Mideast. Except this time it was the United States, France and Britain who wrought havoc in the Arab world, assisted by modern Turkey.
The UN’s refugee czar, Antonio Guterres, just asserted that there are now 4,013,000 Syrian refugees outside their homeland, and another 7.6 million as internal refugees from the war raging there since 2011.
That total’s some 11.6 million refugees- a staggering 50% of Syria’s population. Over a quarter million are refugees in Europe; the rest spread across the Mideast with the largest numbers in Lebanon and Jordan.
Some of the millions of people who have fled Syria. Photo credit: The UN Refugee Agency / G. Gubaeva
This flood of displaced people is the largest number of refugees in the past 25 years, according to the UN’s Guterres. In fact, Syria’s refugees now exceed in number the 5.5 million Palestinian refugees. At least the Syrians may one day return home; by contrast, Palestinians, stateless for over six decades, have no realistic hope of returning to their former homes in what is today Israel.
Before the 2011 war, Syria used to be a vibrant, growing nation with beautiful old cities and a rich, ancient culture going back over 2,500 years. Damascus is believed to be the oldest continually inhabited city in the world.
Syria was always regarded as the beating heart of the Arab world and its intellectual epicenter. It was also the progenitor of Arab nationalism, a long-time defender of the Palestinians, and a determined foe of Israel – though in recent years the Israeli-Syrian border has been very quiet. Damascus, two generations behind Israel in military strength, dared not confront the powerful Jewish state directly.
For the past four decades, Syria has been ruled by its Alawi minority, an offshoot of Islam’s Shia faith. Alawi, like their fellow Shia in Lebanon, were the nation’s poorest, most marginalized people. The only work many could get was in the military. Eventually, an iron-fisted Alawi air force general, Hafez al-Assad, seized power. After Assad’s death, his second son Bashar took charge of the regime, backed by a strong army and ruthless security organs.
The Bush administration, prompted by Israel, toyed with the idea of toppling Syria’s Assad regime but it backed down when a few smart minds in Washington asked who would the US get to replace the existing government? Syria’s main opposition came from the outlawed, underground Muslim Brotherhood that spoke for Syria’s long-repressed Sunni majority. Washington wanted no part of the Muslim Brothers. Better the Asads, who quietly cooperated with Washington in spite of being backed by Iran.
But in 2009-2010, Washington changed policy. As anti-Iranian war fever in the US mounted, the White House demanded that Tehran renounce its alliance with Iran, or else. The plan was to isolate Iran prior to its being attacked. But Syria refused to cut its vital ties to Tehran.
So Syria was marked for regime change. Washington was fed up with Arab leaders who defied the writ of the American Raj. The Assads would meet the same grisly fate as Saddam Hussein and Muammar Khadaffi.

Key points of the Iranian nuclear deal
Tue, 14 Jul 2015
Iran and six leading world powers signed a comprehensive plan for ending international sanctions against Iran in exchange for putting restrictions on its controversial nuclear program. RT takes a look at the groundbreaking document.
The deal signed in Vienna on Tuesday is meant to break a 12-year standoff over Iran's nuclear activities, which some nations claimed involved military research. The Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) acknowledges Iran's right for peaceful nuclear development on par with any other signatory to the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.
The agreement provides for a joint commission to be established to monitor the implementation of the action plan and handle dispute situations. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is tasked with verifying voluntary nuclear-related measures by Iran. Iran and the six nations - China, France, Germany, Russia, the UK and the US, are to hold ministerial-level meetings at least once every two years to monitor the progress.

Leader of Ahrar Al-Sham Terrorist Group Killed in Syria
Jul 15, 2015
TEHRAN (FNA)- The leader of Al-Qaeda-linked Ahrar al-Sham Takfiri terrorist group in Syria was killed in a double-bombing attack in the country’s Northwest.
Abu Abdel Rahman Salqin was killed after two unidentified bombers detonated their explosives at the terrorist group’s headquarters in the Abu Talha area of the Northwestern Syrian city of Idlib on Tuesday, the Associated Press reported.
Six other high ranking members of the terrorist group were also killed in the deadly incident.
The so-called Syrian Observatory for Human Rights has described Rahman Salqin as "one of Ahrar al-Sham's most senior leaders".
No group has yet claimed responsibility for the Tuesday attack, but according to the UK-based monitoring group, the ISIL Takfiri militant group could be responsible for the bombings.

Greece's Gordian Knot: Syriza Tackles Austerity
Swedish and Danish finance ministers backed UK Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne, who said that EU member states, who are not part of the Eurozone, should not take part in the Greek bailout, Euractiv reported.
"Britain is not in the euro, so the idea that British taxpayers will be on the line for this Greek deal is a complete non-starter. The Eurozone needs to foot its own bill," Osborne said on Tuesday.
The remarks were made in response to Jean-Claude Juncker's proposal to use the European Financial Stabilization Mechanism (EFSM) fund, which all EU member states contribute to, to help Greece.
A municipal worker walks between Greek flags, which are placed on a stage for the celebrations of Orthodox Good Friday at central Metropoleos square in Athens, on Thursday, April 9, 2015
The EFSM was designed to preserve financial stability in Europe and could transfer emergency funding of up to $66 billion to any EU member state in need. It has been operating since 2010.
Swedish Finance Minister Magdalena Andersson commented that Stockholm expects that the EU will stick to the agreement reached in 2010, when British Prime Minister David Cameron made a strong case for not using the EFSM funds to bailout Eurozone countries.
European Commissioner for the Euro and Social Dialogue Valdis Dombrovskis called using EFSM funds "not an easy solution," but promised to provide Britain, Sweden, Denmark and the Czech Republic "guarantees against any negative financial consequence."
The EFSM is not to be confused with the European Stability Mechanism (EMS), an EU agency created in 2012 and aimed at providing financial assistance to Eurozone members.

MH17 Most Likely Shot Down by Air-to-Air Missile
© Sputnik/ Mikhail Voskresenskiy 15.07.2015
The Russian Investigative Committee has data suggesting that the Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 was most likely brought down by an air-to-air missile produced outside of Russia, committee spokesman Vladimir Markin said Wednesday.
MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Malaysia Airlines flight MH17, en route from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur, crashed near Donetsk in eastern Ukraine in July 2014, killing all 298 people on board.
“Regarding the priority version, we have data, including the one based on the results of examinations, [that suggests that] the plane was shot down by an air-to-air missile… Moreover, experts believe that they have established the type of missile and this is not a Russian-made missile,” Markin said.
Russian Investigators Release Name of Key Witness in MH17 Crash in Ukraine
The data that the Russian Investigative Committee possesses, confirms the testimony of Evgeniy Agapov, a witness from Ukraine who served as a mechanic in the First Squadron Brigade of Tactical Aviation of the Ukrainian Air Force, he added.

US Military Coup for Euro Meltdown?
13.07.2015 Finian Cunningham
The capitulation of the Greek government to Berlin-led finance capital is a daunting watershed moment. It marks the “disciplining” of the wider European electorate under corporatist financier rule. What is happening in Greece is a forerunner for other European Union states.
In that event, widespread social unrest can be expected.
The rapid expansion of American military forces across Europe over the past year has invoked the pretext of “defending” NATO allies from alleged Russian aggression. But an altogether different contingency is that Washington is preparing for a military coup in Europe – in the wake of economic collapse stemming from the Greek debt crisis.
Just last week, American army general Ray Odierno – a member of the US Joint Chiefs of staff – outlined plans for a new battalion of troops in Germany, along with heavy armour and other equipment. Odierno told the Wall Street Journal that the new military installations were to counter “the rising Russian threat”.

NATO Members to Ditch Each Other in Case of War - Poll
Turns out, the majority of Europeans don’t really want to fulfill their NATO duties, according to which all members of the alliance should collectively defend each other in case one of them is attacked, a Pew Research Center poll revealed.
NATO seems to be struggling with its existential raison d'etre, after the alliance lost its original enemy, the Soviet Union, and has yet to find a new role to fulfill.
Some say the United States wants to portray Russia as a new enemy to generate fear among Europeans, but according to the poll it looks like most Europeans aren't buying that nonsense, the Philadelphia Trumpet reported.
The survey asked: "If Russia got into a serious military conflict with one of its neighboring countries that is our NATO ally, do you think our country should or should not use military force to defend that country?"
Despite NATO's Article V, which establishes the idea of collective defense as the first and foremost concern of the alliance, only in two out of the eight surveyed countries the majority of citizens said their countries should use military force to defend their allies (only Americans and Canadians said they were ready to go to war if their NATO allies were attacked).
One in Three EU Citizens Wants EU Army to Replace NATO Reliance
Western European countries, in particular, were against interfering on behalf of their allies. 53 percent of Frenchmen said "No" to defending an ally; in Italy, it was 51 percent against and 40 percent in favor, while 9 percent abstained; the Germans were the most decisive — 58 percent said they shouldn't defend an ally and only 38 percent said they should.
The poll results were "devastating," according to Judy Dempsey, editor-in-chief of Strategic Europe at Carnegie Europe.

'German Empire' Succeeded in Subduing Greece But It Still 'Will Fall'
16.07.2015 © AP Photo/ Thanassis Stavrakis
The painful bailout deal Greece was forced to accept this week has exposed what many feared – the European Union is run by a body that could best be described as the German Empire in terms of both its operation and implications, political journalist David Dayen said.
Dayen compared the agreement Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras had to sign to a "surrender document, which looks like the terms you impose on a country that lost a war."
And a true war it was, with the winning side taking special pleasure in crashing and humiliating what essentially should have been a partner, not an enemy. Accordingly, the wishes of the Greek leadership or people were not taken into consideration.
"The German consuls were as vindictive as possible, slowly and deliberately grinding down the Greek economy, carpet-bombing the political opposition, and openly threatening expulsion from the European monetary union as punishment," Dayen observed.

Greek Parliament Endorses EU-dictated Austerity Programme
By Chris Marsden
Global Research, July 16, 2015
World Socialist Web Site
Greek Prime Minister and Syriza leader Alexis Tsipras secured the backing of parliament early Thursday for the savage programme of austerity he agreed with eurozone officials last weekend.
Obtaining passage of the programme was never in doubt. The legislation was overwhelmingly approved by a vote of 229 to 64. There were six abstentions. Three openly pro-austerity parties—New Democracy, PASOK and To Potami—supported the Syriza government’s bill. The “no” vote included MPs from the Communist Party (KKE) and the fascist Golden Dawn, along with 32 Syriza MPs.
Outside parliament, there was growing anger over Tsipras’ treacherous deal. The public-sector union Adedy held a four-hour strike Wednesday morning. That evening there were several protests in Athens and Thessaloniki. The Communist Party (KKE)-affiliated union federation PAME held a fairly large protest as the parliamentary debate got underway. Demonstrations were also staged by ANTARSYA and anarchists.
The government deployed riot police, who fired tear gas as Molotov cocktails were thrown. Those attacked by the police included members of Syriza’s youth organisation.
But within the parliament building, Tsipras secured the votes of his right-wing coalition partners, the Independent Greeks, in addition to the three pro-austerity parties. The Syriza-led coalition has condemned Greek workers and youth to further suffering, to the point where Greece’s persecutors in Berlin are talking of combining the austerity measures they demanded with “humanitarian aid.”

Israeli-made air-to-air missile may have downed MH17 - report
16 Jul, 2015
A report on Malaysian Airlines MH17 air disaster in Ukraine last year by a group of old-hand aviation security experts maintains that the Boeing might have been downed by an Israeli Python air-to-air missile.
The report was leaked via the private LiveJournal account of Albert Naryshkin (aka albert_lex) late on Tuesday and has already been widely discussed by social media communities in Russia.
The authors of the investigative report have calculated the possible detonation initiation point of the missile that hit the passenger aircraft and approximate number and weight of strike elements, which in turn designated the type and presumed manufacturer of the weapon.
Details and reasoning http://www.rt.com/news/310039-mh17-israeli-missile-version/
