Libya sitrep, counter insurgency progress report
Anti-NATO Forces Retake Areas in Southern Libya by Abayomi Azikiwe
www.workers.org January 29, 2014

For nearly seven months in 2011, NATO planes — particularly from the U.S., France, Britain and Canada — carried out a massive bombing campaign in Libya intended to overthrow the government of Muammar Gaddafi.
After getting the U.N. Security Council to pass a resolution imposing an arms embargo on Libya and then another authorizing a so-called “no-fly zone” in which only their planes could fly, the imperialists succeeded in having Gaddafi captured and brutally killed, opening the way for the establishment of a new regime that would further their interests in that oil-rich North African country.
Now, just two and a half years later, this puppet government is losing ground in southern and western Libya to pro-Gaddafi forces, who have taken back several towns and an air base.
These developments have prompted French Admiral Edouard Guillard to appeal for a renewed imperialist intervention in Libya, claiming that developments on the southern border could lead to a “terrorist threat.” (Washington Post, Jan. 27)
Guillard claimed that any intervention would require the “consent” of the neocolonial regime that these same imperialists set up in Tripoli. It is headed by Prime Minister Ali Zeidan and the General National Congress.
Since mid-January forces that remain allied with the former Jamahiriya political and economic system set up by Gaddafi have taken control of several cities and towns in the south. Clashes have also been reported around the capital of Tripoli, where nationalist forces have fought pitched battles with militias and military forces backed by the GNC regime. (Libya Herald, Jan. 20)
The withdrawal of the Tebu, who are dark-skinned Africans, from an air base at Tamenhint created the conditions for the seizure of this important location by pro-Gaddafi forces on Jan. 21.
According to a Jan. 22 Saudi Gazette report, “The Tamenhint air base 30 km northeast of Sebha is reported to be back in pro-Gaddafi hands after Tebu forces from Murzuk who were guarding it withdrew. They unilaterally pulled out Monday evening [Jan. 20] claiming that the government was deliberately exploiting clashes in Sebha between Tebus and Awlad Sulaiman in order to divert attention from moves to replace it with a new administration.”
These events have sent shockwaves throughout the GNC and Zeidan, its weak and vacillating prime minister, who is allied with the United States and other imperialist states responsible for installing the current regime. The situation in Libya has clearly shown that the current regime has failed to stabilize its rule. Militias set up to bring down the Gaddafi regime are reportedly in open defiance of Zeidan and other “authorities” in Tripoli.
Oil is the major export of the North African state. The industry has been largely shut down after workers and militias at several drilling facilities and ports took control of production and threatened to engage in trade with foreign firms without the consent of Tripoli. Zeidan has limited support even within the GNC; the Islamic Justice and Construction Party recently resigned from the government over political differences with the prime minister.

Draconian laws enacted
Nonetheless, it is in the south that the green flag of the Jamahiriya is being openly flown in defiance of the imperialist-backed regime. This is causing panic in the government, which passed a new law banning satellite television networks that have been broadcasting pro-Gaddafi news and commentaries.
According to a Jan. 26 report from AllAfrica.com, Decree 5/2014, entitled “Concerning the Cessation and Ban on the Broadcasting of Certain Satellite Channels,” instructs the ministries of Foreign Affairs, Communications and Media to “take necessary steps required” to halt the transmission of all satellite television stations hostile to the regime in Tripoli. The decree further instructs the government to “take all measures” against states or businesses in territories from which the channels are broadcast if they fail to block the transmissions.
This ban on satellite stations that have taken a pro-Gaddafi position in their editorial content includes the al-Khadra Channel and al-Jamahiriyah.
Dissatisfaction is growing among the Libyan population. Once the most prosperous nation in Africa, with a standard of living that exceeded several European countries, the conditions inside the country have drastically deteriorated since the 2011 imperialist-imposed counterrevolution. The decline in living standards, the failure of the regime to rein in the militias that terrorize the population, the collapse of the oil industry and widespread corruption have drawn broad criticism, even among the favored elites.
Another decree issued in January prohibits scholarship students and public employees from speaking out against the conditions prevailing in Libya. According to AllAfrica.com, “It calls on Libyan embassies abroad and others to draw up lists of names and refer them to the Prosecutor General for prosecution.”

Iraq, Syria, Afghanistan
There is no benefit for the masses in oppressed nations where the U.S. and other imperialist states have overthrown governments and installed puppet regimes. The situation in Libya is mirrored in Iraq, where people are dying every day from internecine conflict and the overall horrendous conditions prevailing among the majority of the population.
Over 100,000 people have died in Syria over the last three years since the U.S. and Saudi Arabia promoted a counterrevolutionary assault on the population. The current Geneva II talks in Switzerland are ostensibly designed to reach a political solution in Syria, but the U.S. and its allies are continuing to finance and coordinate those seeking the overthrow of the government of President Bashar al-Assad.
Anti-war and anti-imperialist groups in the Western states should oppose this military and political interference into the internal affairs of African, Middle Eastern and Asian states — such as Afghanistan, where after 12 years the Pentagon-NATO forces are no closer to victory than in 2001. The U.S. and NATO must be forced to withdraw their occupying forces and shut down their military bases.
Those oppressed nations under imperialist occupation should be paid reparations for the destruction carried out by Western military forces. The resources utilized to maintain these occupations should instead be redirected to rebuild the cities and towns here that are facing an unprecedented economic crisis through austerity and massive poverty.

Does the TR admin support terrorism?
In Turkey, Terror Probe Infuriates Prime Minister
by Abigail R. Esman IPT News January 15, 2014

On Tuesday, two senior al-Qaida leaders were arrested in Kilis Province, Turkey during a large-scale counterterrorism sweep by Turkish police. The arrests, conducted alongside a raid on the Van province offices of the Humanitarian Relief Foundation (known as IHH), took place less than six months after Turkey partnered with the United States to develop a specialized counter-terrorism program aimed at reducing Islamic radicalism in the Middle East.
Well done, you say?
Not so fast.
Hours after the arrests, the government summarily dismissed the two police chiefs who had overseen the operation, and reassigned several others. Moreover, according to Turkish daily Hurriyet, "bodyguards of the eight prosecutors who launched the anti-al Qaeda operations" were also replaced. Deputy Prime Minister Bülent Arınç particularly criticized the raid on IHH offices, denying any connection between the organization and al-Qaida. "The İHH is a legal organization, it is working for humanitarian goals," he said in a press statement.

Re: Does the TR admin support terrorism?
Is this a case of government secret operations being so secret that real people think they should be doing their jobs according to the cover story and end up fouling the governments own nest? What a farce!

Hi CC, and a belated Happy. New.Year to you and yours. Good to be reading from you again.

Is Syrian "Peace" Conference Laying the Foundation for War?
30 January 2014 By Kevin Zeese and Margaret Flowers , Truthout
The Geneva II "peace" conference has all the indicia of a sham. Those opposed to war in Syria better get ready to prevent war again.
The Geneva II conference, which claims to be seeking to end the war in Syria, seems designed to fail and instead to provide an excuse for military intervention by the United States and its allies. Human rights activist Ajamu Baraka describes the negotiations as an "Orwellian subterfuge" designed to provide justification for war and a lot of facts support his view.
The negotiations are destined to fail because of the way they have been set up and the preconditions the United States and its allies in the Syrian opposition have made - demanding that President Bashar al-Assad agree to leave government before negotiations go forward.

They involve more than a dozen felonies, including bid-rigging on municipal bond debt; colluding to rig interest rates on hundreds of trillions of dollars in mortgages, derivatives and other contracts; exposing investors to excessive risk; failing to disclose known risks, including those in the Bernie Madoff scandal; and engaging in multiple forms of mortgage fraud.
So why, asks Chicago Alderwoman Leslie Hairston, are we still doing business with them?

Turkish ruling party lawmaker resigns amid probe
A senior Turkish lawmaker of the ruling AK Party has resigned from his political bloc after accusing the government of “protecting thieves” in a high-level corruption investigation.
“Unfortunately, the AK Party has of today become blackened. It has become the architect of a process in which corruption is covered up, thieves are protected and the unlawful has become the law,” Muhammed Cetin told a news conference in parliament on Friday.
The resignation came after the government dismissed or reassigned some 800 police officers in the latest wave of purging of police and judicial officials involved in a corruption investigation.
Cetin was the eighth lawmaker who resigned since the corruption scandal broke in December 2013. AK Party still controls 319 of 550 seats in the parliament.
“There are many members of parliament who cannot stomach what is happening,” he said.

Daniel McAdams: What is interesting is that after the meeting between opposition leader Vitaly Klitschko and John Kerry, the Ukrainian opposition leaders said that Kerry told them: “We are with the opposition, we give them our full support.”
Kerry also said that President Yanukovich has not done enough in his reforms. And the US has even called for a change in the constitution of Ukraine. But at the same time he warned against meddling by outside powers in Ukraine’s internal affairs. So there is an absolute disconnect in US foreign policy, and I think anyone who is paying attention notices it.
RT: There is a disconnect amongst the opposition there too, isn’t it? Because John Kerry is talking with the opposition, but does he know who they are?
DM: And by what rights does he have any authority to undermine the legitimately elected government and tell the president of this country, what he should or should not do?
You know that is really funny, because the US State Department released something yesterday, saying Ukraine should move more towards a more parliamentary system instead of the strong presidential system.
And this is the same week that President Obama in the State of the Union address said: “Well, if congress does not go along with these laws that I plan on pass, I’m going to start ruling by the executive order.” So it is quite ironic.

Moves towards a leisure society or a euthanised planet?
US military, Lockheed deem driverless convoy test a success
The US Army, along with defense contractor Lockheed Martin say they've successfully tested an autonomous vehicle convoy
[...] Lockheed says the aim of this particular system is primarily to get rid of the need for humans in these convoys, and potentially driving them faster with a little help from computers.

More jobs going to robots and gameboys. This is an illustration of the accelerating transfer of labour from humans to machines. The Bilderberg (Pilgrims) puppet regimes respond by demonising the unemployed, making it harder to claim state benefits and reducing cash to benefits claimants by any means. Cold deaths will increase this year as a covert policy of euthanasia by deliberate failure to implement any policy to minimise casualties by successive UK regimes that find funding imperial covert and overt wars, gang green boondoggles like wind farms and carbon capture, lending foreign despots billions to build wind farms then letting the IMF and GEF grab their land when they fail to repay, as planned, bank bailouts, foreign gov't bailouts, funding the carbuncle EU, UN, NATO and their spin-ofs and a whole lot more, more worthy than UK lives. Truly an enemy of the UK, and humanity.

Fars News of Syria
Fars
TEHRAN (FNA)- The Syrian army conducted several military operations and made major advances in strategic regions of Deir Ezzur city in the Eastern parts of the country.
The army units supported by artillery units targeted and destroyed several gathering centers of the armed rebels in Al-Roshdiya district of Deir Ezzur.
Al-Haviqa and Al-Sanaeh districts of Deir Ezzur were also scenes of fierce clashes between the Syrian army and the militants.
Also in the past 24 hours, the Syrian army conducted killed dozens of the Islamic State of Iraq and Levant (ISIL) members in a series of operations against the al-qaeda group.
The army units targeted and destroyed the militants’ gathering centers in Sarmin city in Idlib countryside in Northwestern Syria and killed several ISIL members.
Meantime, Syrian Deputy Foreign Minister Faisal Meqdad also said that Saudi Arabia’s stances had ruined the Geneva II talks.
“Saudi Arabia has mobilized all its capacities for destruction of the Syrian government,” Meqdad said.
Elsewhere in Al-Raqqa, the ISIL formed a female police brigade to arrest the women who do not obey their orders.
Syria has been experiencing unrest since March 2011 with organized attacks by well-armed terrorists and militants against the Syrian army and civilians across the country.
Thousands of people have been killed since terrorist and armed groups turned protest rallies into armed clashes.
The government blames outlaws, saboteurs, and armed terrorist groups for the deaths, stressing that the unrest is being orchestrated from abroad.
In October 2011, calm was almost restored in most parts of the Arab state after President Assad started a reform initiative in the country, but Israel, the US and its Arab allies brought the country into chaos through every possible means. Tel Aviv, Washington and some Arab capitals have been staging various plots in the hope of increasing unrests in Syria.
The US daily, Washington Post, reported in May, 2012 that the Syrian rebels and terrorist groups battling Assad's government have received significantly more and better weapons in recent weeks, a crime paid for by the Persian Gulf Arab states and coordinated by the United States.
The newspaper, quoting opposition activists and US and foreign officials, reported that Obama administration officials emphasized the administration has expanded contacts with opposition military forces to provide the Persian Gulf nations with assessments of rebel credibility and command-and-control infrastructure.
According to the report, material was being stockpiled in Damascus, in Idlib near the Turkish border and in Zabadani on the Lebanese border.
Opposition activists who several months ago said the rebels were running out of ammunition said in May that the flow of weapons - most bought on the black market in neighboring countries or from elements of the Syrian military in the past - has significantly increased after a decision by Saudi Arabia, Qatar and other Persian Gulf states to provide millions of dollars in funding each month.

TEHRAN (FNA)- Opposition sources in Syria said around 1,900 people, including at least 430 civilians, have been killed in the country during a week of talks between the Syrian government and the foreign-backed opposition in Geneva.
The so-called Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported the figures on Friday, saying the civilian fatalities were caused by fighting and lack of humanitarian aid, Islam Times reported.
