The Cameron regime and the UK sham democracy

It's Business That Really Rules Us Now

George Monbiot
Lobbying is the least of it: corporate interests have captured the entire democratic process. No wonder so many have given up on politics

November 12, 2013 "Information Clearing House - "The Guardian" -- It's the reason for the collapse of democratic choice. It's the source of our growing disillusionment with politics. It's the great unmentionable. Corporate power. The media will scarcely whisper its name. It is howlingly absent from parliamentary debates. Until we name it and confront it, politics is a waste of time.
The political role of business corporations is generally interpreted as that of lobbyists, seeking to influence government policy. In reality they belong on the inside. They are part of the nexus of power that creates policy. They face no significant resistance, from either government or opposition, as their interests have now been woven into the fabric of all three main political parties in Britain.
Most of the scandals that leave people in despair about politics arise from this source. On Monday, for instance, the Guardian revealed that the government's subsidy system for gas-burning power stations is being designed by an executive from the Dublin-based company ESB International, who has been seconded into the Department of Energy. What does ESB do? Oh, it builds gas-burning power stations.
On the same day we learned that a government minister, Nick Boles, has privately assured the gambling company Ladbrokes that it needn't worry about attempts by local authorities to stop the spread of betting shops. His new law will prevent councils from taking action.
Last week we discovered that G4S's contract to run immigration removal centres will be expanded, even though all further business with the state was supposed to be frozen while allegations of fraud were investigated.
Every week we learn that systemic failures on the part of government contractors are no barrier to obtaining further work, that the promise of efficiency, improvements and value for money delivered by outsourcing and privatisation have failed to materialise.
The monitoring which was meant to keep these companies honest is haphazard, the penalties almost nonexistent, the rewards can be stupendous, dizzying, corrupting. Yet none of this deters the government. Since 2008, the outsourcing of public services has doubled, to £20bn. It is due to rise to £100bn by 2015.
This policy becomes explicable only when you recognise where power really lies. The role of the self-hating state is to deliver itself to big business. In doing so it creates a tollbooth economy: a system of corporate turnpikes, operated by companies with effective monopolies.
It's hardly surprising that the lobbying bill – now stalled by the House of Lords – offered almost no checks on the power of corporate lobbyists, while hog-tying the charities who criticise them. But it's not just that ministers are not discouraged from hobnobbing with corporate executives: they are now obliged to do so.
Thanks to an initiative by Lord Green, large companies have ministerial "buddies", who have to meet them when the companies request it. There were 698 of these meetings during the first 18 months of the scheme, called by corporations these ministers are supposed be regulating. Lord Green, by the way, is currently a government trade minister. Before that he was chairman of HSBC, presiding over the bank while it laundered vast amounts of money stashed by Mexican drugs barons. Ministers, lobbyists – can you tell them apart?
That the words corporate power seldom feature in the corporate press is not altogether surprising. It's more disturbing to see those parts of the media that are not owned by Rupert Murdoch or Lord Rothermere acting as if they are.
For example, for five days every week the BBC's Today programme starts with a business report in which only insiders are interviewed. They are treated with a deference otherwise reserved for God on Thought for the Day. There's even a slot called Friday Boss, in which the programme's usual rules of engagement are set aside and its reporters grovel before the corporate idol. Imagine the outcry if Today had a segment called Friday Trade Unionist or Friday Corporate Critic.
This, in my view, is a much graver breach of BBC guidelines than giving unchallenged airtime to one political party but not others, as the bosses are the people who possess real power – those, in other words, whom the BBC has the greatest duty to accost. Research conducted by the Cardiff school of journalism shows business representatives now receive 11% of airtime on the BBC's 6 o'clock news (this has risen from 7% in 2007), while trade unionists receive 0.6% (which has fallen from 1.4%). Balance? Impartiality? The BBC puts a match to its principles every day.
And where, beyond the Green party, Plaid Cymru, a few ageing Labour backbenchers, is the political resistance? After the article I wrote last week, about the grave threat the transatlantic trade and investment partnership presents to parliamentary sovereignty and democratic choice, several correspondents asked me what response there has been from the Labour party. It's easy to answer: nothing.
Tony Blair and Gordon Brown purged the party of any residue of opposition to corporations and the people who run them. That's what New Labour was all about. Now opposition MPs stare mutely as their powers are given away to a system of offshore arbitration panels run by corporate lawyers.
Since Blair, parliament operates much as Congress in the United States does: the lefthand glove puppet argues with the righthand glove puppet, but neither side will turn around to face the corporate capital that controls almost all our politics. This is why the assertion that parliamentary democracy has been reduced to a self-important farce has resonated so widely over the past fortnight.
So I don't blame people for giving up on politics. I haven't given up yet, but I find it ever harder to explain why. When a state-corporate nexus of power has bypassed democracy and made a mockery of the voting process, when an unreformed political funding system ensures that parties can be bought and sold, when politicians of the three main parties stand and watch as public services are divvied up by a grubby cabal of privateers, what is left of this system that inspires us to participate?

After Monbiot's performance in supporting the global tax enabling CO2 con and boondoggle derivatives, and my frequent castigation of his witterings on the topic, I never considered the possibility that I'd be publicising one of his articles on my main blog. But there you go. The chap writes something that is blatantly true and names some names. What is poor blogger to do? Give credit where credit is due. Here is an example of what George is talking about
Corporate interests having a bigger influence on government than the electorate. MPs are deaf to what the majority of the public want, such as out of the EU political system.

Britain must stay in EU, says business lobby group
CBI says single market is fundamental to British business, and EU membership benefits outweigh costs
Britain's business lobby group will set out its "unequivocal" support for Britain staying in the European Union on Monday, claiming that membership brings each household some £3,000 a year.
The CBI said a poll of members around the country showed the vast majority wanted to remain part of the EU, subject to important reforms. At its annual conference in London, the group will stress that benefits such as easier access to export markets, both in Europe and further afield, easily outweigh the costs.
Presenting his "business vision for a reformed EU", CBI director general John Cridland countered those calling for a so-called "Brexit" by stressing that being outside the world's largest trading bloc would leave the UK isolated and without influence.
David Cameron has promised to put Britain's EU membership to a vote in 2017. The referendum has caused huge controversy inside the Tory party, which is split between those MPs who are pushing the prime minister for a vote before the 2015 election and a faction led by the former chancellor Ken Clarke, who has described the vote as silly and reckless.
The CBI's research could strengthen Cameron's hand inside the Tory party, especially as it found that more than three-quarters of small and medium-sized businesses back staying inside the single market. Traditionally, polls have shown large majorities among large businesses for EU membership against a large no vote from smaller enterprises.

The EU is a major upward wealth transfer enabler. The upper hierarchy, E. Commission, Council etc exist due to and are run by the Bilderberg outfit whose interests lie in a one world government and elimination of the middle classes by impoverishment through taxation, inflation and destruction of the industrial base, the culling of the eldery through slow poisons in water, food and medicines, particularly vaccines, and euthanasia by the NHS. Another ambition of Bilderberg is the abolition of sovereignty and the EU is a mechanism that enables 5th columnist regimes like Cameron's to sell out the country by signing treaties and agreements without electorate permission, that accomplish just that.

This pro EU article -
The cost of EU membership http://www.federalunion.org.uk/the-cost-of-eu-membership/
neglects to mention all the so-called benefits arising from membership didn't arise from membership of the political system, (whose leadership don't even abide by its own rules) but from the earlier participation in the European Economic Community, whose UK participation was agreed by referendum unlike EU membership. Blair even repealed the death sentence for treason to avoid the likelihood of his and HMQEII's necks getting stretched for signing away sovereignty to a foreign organisation, created by corporations, the EC.

This PDF details most of the negative cost benefits but fails to mention how much better off the UK would be (~ £124 bil pa) were the country to take a step back to the ECC conditions, i.e. non participation and non contribution to the boondoggle European political union.
Still out of control? Measuring eleven years of EU regulation

Most cash coming back from the EU benefits landowners such as MPs and their relatives. Astronomical energy bills can be blamed on ludicrous EU CO2 emission regulations and complicit, beneficiary MPs.

The Revolutionaries in Our Midst
Chris Hedges
Freedom of the press and legal protection for those who expose government abuses and lies have been obliterated by the corporate state. The resulting self-exile of investigative journalists such as Glenn Greenwald, Jacob Appelbaum and Laura Poitras, along with the indictment of Barret Brown, illustrate this. All acts of resistance—including nonviolent protest—have been conflated by the corporate state with terrorism. The mainstream, commercial press has been emasculated through the Obama administration’s repeated use of the Espionage Act to charge and sentence traditional whistle-blowers. Governmental officials with a conscience are too frightened to reach out to mainstream reporters, knowing that the authorities’ wholesale capturing and storing of electronic forms of communication make them easily identifiable.
Elected officials and the courts no longer impose restraint or practice oversight. The last line of defense lies with those such as Hammond, Julian Assange, Edward Snowden and Chelsea Manning who are capable of burrowing into the records of the security and surveillance state and have the courage to pass them on to the public. But the price of resistance is high.

Seattle WiFi Tracking Network Monitors the Public's Present, Past Locations and More
Madison Ruppert
The Seattle Police Department purchased a network in February to be used by emergency responders, though it is also capable of tracking devices with Wi-Fi enabled, revealing past location data and more.
Tracking smartphones with Wi-Fi enabled has become somewhat common. One company tracked pedestrians around London via high-tech trashcans and the practice of tracking shoppers via Wi-Fi is now widespread.
However, the “mesh network” purchased by Seattle police goes beyond just tracking location. It can find what applications have been downloaded, what type of device it is, the device’s IP address and both current and past locations of the device.

Real-Time Facial Recognition Offered to Police in New Program
[...] One of the latest military-grade systems can now scan 36 million faces per second, or every face in the U.S. within 10 seconds. It is a technology that has trickled down from use in war zones like Afghanistan to catalog potential terrorists, to U.S. border control applications for combating illegal immigration, to FBI crime detection, to post-riot analysis, and right on down to establishing personal ID for a wide range of private companies.

Transhuman: Radical Life Extension in the Quest For Immortality
Nicholas West
The question is, Do you want to live forever? In the following short documentary you will learn about the typical worldview of Transhumanists. It is, in my opinion, philosophically and technologically interesting to explore, but ultimately naive and dismissive of the concepts surrounding consciousness and the soul.
Perhaps, the most troubling aspect of Transhumanism not addressed here is that not all of it will be elective. In fact, it might be downright selective. From DNA nanobots to the entire restructuring of the human genome, the corporate state aligned with the medical-military-industrial complex might demand that we are "optimized" and "efficient" in order for us to partake in society at a cost-effective level.
It is a concept that has been espoused by elites before.

How [Monsanto's] Roundup Weedkiller Can Promote Cancer, New Study Reveals
Sayer Ji
Roundup herbicide (glyphosate) is in our air, rain, groundwater, soil and most food in the U.S., and an increasing body of research reveals it has cancer-promoting properties.
Researchers from the Indian Institute of Toxicology Research have recently confirmed the carcinogenic potential of Roundup herbicide using human skin cells (HaCaT ) exposed to extremely low concentrations of the world's best selling herbicide.
The researchers previously reported on glyphosate's tumor promoting potential in a two-stage mouse skin carcinogenesis model[i] through its disruption of proteins that regulate calcium (Ca2+- ) signaling and oxidative stress (SOD 1), but were unable in these investigations to identify the exact molecular mechanisms behind how glyphosate contributes to tumor promotion.
The new study, published in the peer-reviewed journal ISRN Dermatology,[ii] sought out to clarify the exact mode of tumorigenic action, finding the likely mechanism behind glyphosate's cancer promoting properties is through the downregulation of mitochondrial apoptotic (self-destructive) signaling pathways, as well as through the disruption of a wide range of cell signaling and regulatory components. Cell proliferative effects were induced by concentrations lower than .1 mM, and as low as 0.01 mM, which is four orders of magnitude lower than concentrations commonly used in GM agricultural applications (e.g. 50 mM).

The Link Between Sunspots, Global Cooling And Agenda 21
NASA Admits Solar Cycle Is The Weakest In 200 Years
Chris Carrington
David Hathaway, head of solar physics research at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville Ala. has spoken to the Wall Street Journal about the weakness of solar cycle 24.
I would say it is the weakest in 200 years.
Hathaway is one of many scientists that are wondering why this cycle is so weak and why the polarity of the magnetic fields on the Sun is out of sync. Normally the magnetic fields on the Sun flip over at the maximum of the cycle. In cycle 24 that hasn’t happened. The north magnetic pole flipped last year, so now technically there are two south poles on the Sun as the south hasn’t yet flipped.(source)
Hathaway and his team at Marshall Solar Physics predict that the maximum sunspot number for cycle 24 will be around 65 which makes it the smallest cycle since 1906. If it drops just a tad under the predicted level then it could indeed be the weakest for 200 years.
So why does it matter?
Well an increasing number of scientists from several different fields have gathered enough evidence to show that conditions on the Sun affect the climate here on Earth and that the smaller and longer the solar cycle is then the colder it will be on Earth for the next decade or even several decades according to some scientists.

Meantime the despicable IPCC claims chem trails don't exist but they say spraying harmful chemicals has to continue otherwise the planet would warm up to 2C due to CO2.
They could produce their reports as toilet rolls, at least then they would have an honest and useful function.
The stratosphere temperature profile mirrors that of the troposphere. The stratosphere is warming, much due to the recovery of the ozone layer that is caused by a reduction in solar UV emissions. Dishonest political science informs it is due to CFC regulation that is a load of bolleaux because what replaced CFCs also depletes ozone. But they can't tell the truth, ever.

Bjørn Lomborg: Subsidizing renewables won’t stop global warming
Hope for a breakthrough at the international climate change talks in Warsaw this week is evergreen: “Where there is a will, there is a way!” the host’s environment minister says. But despite this optimism, there is little global will for an overarching agreement akin to the failed Kyoto protocol.
Yet there is a very different option that’s not even on the agenda in Warsaw: Instead of pouring more money into subsidizing inefficient renewables, we could make much cheaper, but more effective, investments in research and development into new energy sources.
The world already is spending about $1-billion a day on renewables — a projected $359-billion for 2013. But just $100-billion per year invested worldwide in R&D would be hundreds of times more effective.
"subsidies won't stop AGW..." Were they ever meant to?

The Eternal Dangers to Democracy of Corporate Power
David McBain
Maybe it's a bit late mentioning it now - now that the corporations, banksters, and such ilk, have our sorely neglected democracy by the short-'n'-curlies. But, at the risk of being a pain-in-the-neck--know-it-all--tol'ya'so type, there were those who warned us well of the danger corporate power is to democracy. What did anyone with two functional brain cells think privatisation was all about? There was even the odd politician with the foresight and integrity to warn of impending disenfranchisement.
Tony Benn springs to mind at the mention of the word integrity. As for 'odd', he was a bit of a political oddity having such integrity as he did. In his diaries, he describes how in the early 70s, Henry Ford, the grandson of Henry Ford I, arrived in the UK. Tony described the occasion as being like an emperor visiting a local tribal chieftain. In his role as President of the Board of Trade, Tony found he had to wrangle with the magnate's direct threat that if Britain didn't join the Common Market (now known as the EU), Ford would take his car plants out of the UK. For most politicians the answer would be a no-brainer: capitulation to the corporate bully, pocket the brown envelope, accept a premiership complete with perks and privileges, and prepare for the speech circuit of his twilight years. (He was unlikely to accept a peerage, as he'd spent much of his early career kicking his hereditary peerage into touch.) However, anyone knowing that man's strength of character can only imagine the quandary he faced at that time.
Tony expressed his view of the imbalance of corporate/people power thus. "Compared to this, the pressure brought to bear in industrial disputes by the unions is minuscule. This power was revealed even more clearly in 1976 when the IMF secured cuts in our public expenditure. These lessons led me to the conclusion that the UK is only superficially governed by MPs and the voters who elect them. Parliamentary democracy is, in truth, little more than a means of securing a periodical change in the management team, which is then allowed to preside over a system that remains in essence intact. If the British people were ever to ask themselves what power they truly enjoyed under our political system they would be amazed to discover how little it is, and some new Chartist agitation might be born and might quickly gather momentum." (Taken from Wikipedia.)

Who Attacked Ghouta?
[...] The Conclusion
On August 21st the world woke up to horrifying images of a chemical attack against civilians in Syria. Over time the details emerged: Rockets with sarin filled warheads landed in rebel-held residential areas, killing hundreds and injuring thousands. However, one crucial detail remained unclear: Who carried out the attack? Each side naturally blamed the other, with western intelligence agencies providing evidence supporting the opposition, and Russian intelligence supporting the regime. Both sides issued biased reports with cherry-picked evidence, only adding to the confusion.

This blog was created to counter these disinformation campaigns, by providing an open online collaboration platform to investigate who is behind the attack. It turned out to be very successful with dozens of contributors meticulously documenting and analyzing thousands of pieces of evidence. Due to the sensitivity of the matter, high standards were enforced: Only reliable evidence verified by multiple sources may be used. No unverifiable statements from a single source, no generous interpretations of blurred images, and no cherry-picked circumstantial evidence.

This post summarizes this effort and provides the final conclusion. It should not be read as an opinion piece that tries to promote a certain point of view by choosing convenient evidence and making unsubstantiated claim. It is the result of a ground-up process that started by meticulous collection of all relevant evidence (regardless of what theory it supports), scrutinizing each item, and examining which scenarios can best match the evidence. At the end of the process only one scenario was found plausible. It is presented below in a hierarchical structure that allows the reader to independently verify every statement: Just follow the links and you will always reach hard evidence: a video, an eyewitness report, a mathematical model etc.

The only plausible scenario that fits the evidence is an attack by opposition forces. Following is a description of the main findings, with each one linked to the evidence that backs it.

Netanyahu halts Israeli plans for new West Bank settler homes following criticism
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has called for his housing minister to reconsider long-term plans to construct thousands of new homes in the West Bank and in the contentious E1 area outside Jerusalem.
Netanyahu said in a statement that the plans would make “no contribution” to settlements, AP reports.
He added that they had caused “unnecessary conflict” with the international community. Earlier this week, Israel, Iran, the US, and the P5+1 countries met in Geneva for negotiations regarding Iran’s nuclear program. The talks failed to produce a much-anticipated interim agreement.
"This is a meaningless step — legally and in practice — and an action that creates an unnecessary confrontation with the international community at a time when we are making an effort to persuade elements in the international community to reach a better deal with Iran," the prime minister said.
Netanyahu’s statement said that housing minister Uri Ariel had accepted the request to reassess plans.

Thom Hartmann on "The Crash of 2016:
The Plot to Destroy America—and What We Can Do to Stop It"

Could the United States face another economic collapse? Writer and broadcaster Thom Hartmann looks back at past financial crises and comes to a startling conclusion. "As long as you don’t look too closely at our nation, things seem under control — the United States looks whole … but when you go around to the 'dark back side' of the nation, you see the shocking truth. There you see a nation whose core fundamentals have been hollowed out," writes Hartmann in his new book, "The Crash of 2016: The Plot to Destroy America — And What We Can Do to Stop It."
AMY GOODMAN: A new analysis by the Associated Press finds that budget cuts imposed this year under sequestration promise to to be far more painful in 2014. Spending is already frozen at 2013 sequestration levels, and the operating budgets of federal agencies could shrink by billions more. The cuts now in place will remain in effect for the next eight years unless Congress acts to change them. Federal funding for food stamps alone could face a nearly $10 billion reduction over the next decade as part of a compromise bill to break a House-Senate deadlock on spending.
Meanwhile, a new report by the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities finds the cuts outlined in the House Republicans’ version of the bill would disqualify some 170,000 U.S. military veterans from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, known as SNAP, which provides food aid to one-in-seven Americans. All of this follows the so-called "Great Recession," which began in 2007 and is the longest, deepest economic downturn since the Great Depression of the ’30s. Meanwhile, income inequality is at levels not seen since just before the 1929 Wall Street crash.
Well, our next guest argues in his new book that the country’s past financial crashes—in 1770, in 1856, in 1929—offer valuable insight into how the wealthy have hijacked the government’s response to the most recent crash. Thom Hartmann is the author of The Crash of 2016: The Plot to Destroy America—and What We Can Do to Stop It. He’s written more than two dozen best-selling books. He’s the host of the nationally syndicated show, The Thom Hartmann Program.
We welcome you to Democracy Now!, Thom.
AMY GOODMAN: And congratulations on the book today. So, the title is The Crash of 2016. Why 2016?
THOM HARTMANN: Well, we’re actually in this crash. It really started in 2006 when the housing market started falling apart, just like in 1927 when the housing market fell apart. And that crash lasted for quite some time, as Hoover did nothing. Now we have a situation where it’s not just do nothing. Obama was successful in the first few months of his administration at putting enough of a band-aid on it that they’re holding it back with baling wire and bubble gum. But Bush had hoped—he saw this coming. The Bush administration had hoped that they could wait until November of 2008, so it would be after the elections, so it wouldn’t hurt the Republican candidates. He was unsuccessful. The Obama administration is now—because they’re not doing the real structural change necessary, they’re hoping they can push it off to 2016. And that’s why we chose that date. There’s an enormous amount of effort in our government and in the Fed to try to hold this off until after the elections of 2016. Whether they’re going to be successful or not, I don’t know. It literally could happen next week.
AMY GOODMAN: What’s the royalist conspiracy?
THOM HARTMANN: We are seeing a repeat of what we saw in the 1920s, what we saw in the 1850s, what we saw in the 1760s and 1770s, which is, basically, very wealthy, very powerful interests rising up and—you know, they’re anti—fundamentally anti-democratic. They’re trying to create an oligarchic form of government, and in many cases succeeding. It’s the war of the rich against the poor and the working—the working people, the middle class, in short summary.

House Voted to Get Banksters Back in the Derivatives Business
Wholesale destruction of U.S. economy may now continue without interruption
Kurt Nimmo
In late October, the House passed a “bipartisan tweak” to the Dodd-Frank bill Congress earlier passed off as “reform” after the banksters nearly crashed the financial system in 2008.
H.R. 992, the Swaps Regulatory Improvement Act, authored primarily by Citibank lobbyists, will allow predatory Wall Street financial institutions to once again engage in high-risk derivatives trading. Losses will be socialized and paid for by the American taxpayer through the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation or FDIC.
“Citigroup’s recommendations were reflected in more than 70 lines of the House committee’s 85-line bill,” Eric Lipton and Ben Protess wrote for the New York Times. “Two crucial paragraphs, prepared by Citigroup in conjunction with other Wall Street banks, were copied nearly word for word.”
Co-sponsors of the bill are on the Citibank payroll. They received nearly 17 times more money from the bank than have members of the House who have not signed on as co-sponsors, according to Forbes. “Citigroup has given $503,150 to current members of the House of Representatives,” writes Tom Groenfeldt. “Representative Jim Himes, D-Conn., has received $66,450 from Citigroup, more than any other member of the House of Representatives. Himes is a co-sponsor of the bill.”
Wall Street lobbyists targeted House Democrats. 70 of them came out in support of the bill. Only two Republicans voted thumbs down. They were washed away by overwhelming support for bankster criminality.

The Birth of a Police State:
UK Police to be Granted Sweeping New Powers

The UK Government is about to pass legislation which will make any behaviour perceived to potentially ‘cause nuisance or annoyance’ a criminal offence. The Anti-Social Behaviour, Crime and Policing Bill also grants local authorities, police and even private security firms sweeping powers to bar citizens from assembling lawfully in public spaces. The Bill has successfully passed through the House of Commons without issue, and is now in the latter stages of review by the House of Lords, after which it will receive Royal Assent and become Law. Those who refuse orders under the new rules will face arrest, fines and even prison time.
