A field leader in Free Army militia, plus dozens of Arab fighters, got killed in an operation for the Syrian Army forces in Sarjeh town in Jabal al-Zawieh of Edlib countryside.

Our correspondent pointed out that about 100 insurgents, including the sniper Abu Musaab and the Libyan leader of Sarjeh fighters Anas al-Khateeb.

TEL AVIV – The Obama administration is leaning toward scaling back its demand for Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to resign and instead may encourage reconciliation talks between Assad and the opposition, according to informed Middle Eastern security officials.
The security officials said Russia has been instrumental in convincing the U.S. to change its position, largely due to growing concern about the massive number of jihadists participating in the insurgency targeting Assad’s regime.
“Jihadists streaming into Syria via Turkey have reached a critical mass, to the point where the equilibrium of power may shift in troubling directions,” said a security official. “It’s to the point where Turkey is now perhaps the biggest al-Qaida base in the world.”
The U.S. has said it understands the issue and is leaning toward changing its position, the official said.

PROVINCES, (SANA)- Units of the army on Tuesday confiscated two cars loaded with weapons and ammunition and eliminated a number of the terrorists who were smuggling weapons and committing acts of kidnapping and looting in Shamsin area in Homs Countryside. Former Australian Foreign Minister Warns against Sending Arms to Syrian Opposition

It is late afternoon and I am standing on top of an active, although temporarily abandoned, Israeli bunker.
Through my Nikon lens I can clearly see a huge Syrian flag waving majestically in the wind. The flag is near, damn near, but why should it not be there – this is all Syria, according to the international law.
Where the flag is waving, it is Syria. Behind the flag, it is Syria; and Syria is where I am standing now, exposed and shivering in the chilly wind coming from the mountains.
It is quite a sight, all around me, quite a sight! Right ahead – destroyed and abandoned – are remains of the houses and buildings of the Syrian town of al- Qunaitra. On the left, the UN, or more precisely, the UNDOF base. There are white trucks and light armored vehicles behind their perimeter; almost like those outside Goma, East Kivu, in DR Congo.
But here, the UN base is sitting on what is called Demilitarized Zone, or DMZ. It is right between the ceasefire 1974 UNDOF lines Alfa and Bravo. Through the DMZ runs shiny and new Israeli barbed, high-voltage, stereotypical, and despite its glow – melancholy – wire fence.
Above all that mess, on top of the mountain, hums an enormous Israeli military post, equipped with dozens of radars, listening devices and antennas. It is far, maybe one kilometer away, but the sound it is producing is like that of a giant beehive. It is really obnoxious stuff – like some cartoon on over-militarization; a battleship placed on top of the mountain.
[...] I park the car and walk around the deep puddles. Then I see them: Israeli soldiers, an entire commando, machineguns ready, climbing the walls, playing some weird war games. They are exercising.
At some point they become aware of me. One soldier walks towards me, slowly.
“Is everything OK?” Here comes the same question, and the same friendly indifference.
“Fine”, I say, pointing at the monstrous decomposed structure. “What was this?”
“An old Syrian base”, he replies.
“Can I?” I point the lens at the commando.
“Sure”, he shrugs the shoulders and goes away.
“Hey”, I scream at him. “How close could I get to the borderline if I walk this way?”
“Puddles are deep,” he smiles. “And you are not wearing boots. Drive further north and you can actually sit on the fence.”
“And burn my ass on thousands of your volts”, I say.
“Precisely”, he laughs.

The meteor that exploded over Russia Friday was slightly larger than previously thought and more powerful, too, NASA scientists say.
The Russian meteor explosion over the city of Chelyabinsk, on Friday (Feb. 15), injured more than 1,000 people and blew out windows across the region in a massive blast captured on cameras by frightened witnesses. Friday afternoon, NASA scientists estimated the meteor was space rock about 50 feet (15 meters) and sparked a blast equivalent of a 300-kiloton explosion. The energy estimate was later increased to 470 kilotons.
But late Friday, NASA revised its estimates on the size and power of the devastating meteor explosion. The meteor's size is now thought to be slightly larger — about 55 feet (17 m) wide — with the power of the blast estimate of about 500 kilotons, 30 kilotons higher than before, NASA officials said in a statement. The meteor was also substantially more massive than thought as well. Initial estimated pegged the space rock's mass at about 7,000 tons. Scientists at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif., now say the meteor weighed about 10,000 tons and was travelling 40,000 mph (64,373 km/h) when it exploded.

On February 8, federal authorities arrested a San Jose man for attempting to set off a car bomb outside a bank in Oakland, California. The charges filed against Matthew Llaneza, 28, stem from a months-long operation staged by the FBI’s South Bay Joint Terrorism Task Force. The event is the latest in a long series of bogus terror plots hatched or otherwise encouraged by the federal government.
According to the sparse criminal complaint submitted 10 days ago, the government’s involvement with the Arizona native—a recent Muslim convert—dates back to November of last year, when undercover FBI agent Christopher Monika met with and convinced Llaneza that he was “connected with the Taliban and the mujahedin in Afghanistan.”

At this point it is clear that Europe is totally finished. The house is burning. It's just a matter of time before it collapses.
Indeed, we get a clear signal of this from Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy, who just announced the following: "It is not enough, there are no green shoots, there is no spring."
To understand the significance of this statement, you need to know a bit more about Rajoy and European politics in general.
Rajoy is the same political leader who, throughout 2012, stated time and again that the Spanish banking system was in great shape. Indeed, he was still claiming, "there will be no rescue of the Spanish banking sector," a mere week before Spain's entire banking system collapsed.
Rajoy then demanded a €100 billion bailout from the EU (Spain's entire banking market cap is just a little over this). It was only then that he admitted that 2012 would be a "bad year." Of course, he also claimed that the bailout was a "triumph" and celebrated by hopping a plane to watch Spain's soccer team play Poland, but that's a story for another time.
Given that Rajoy has only admitted Spain is screwed at times when the entire system is going under, we have to ask ourselves... How BAD are things that he just admitted, "there are no green shoots, there is no spring"?
The short answer: HORRIFIC.
Spain only just squeaked through 2012 by using 90% of its social security fund to buy Spanish debt. The country now has over €200 billion in new debt to issue in 2013.
Where on earth Spain will get this money from remains to be seen, given that even Spanish banks became net sellers of Spanish debt last year as they sold assets to return money to fleeing depositors.
Indeed, the country now is attempting to find idiots, I mean investors, in the US, by offering a Dollar-denominated bond. After all, who wouldn't want to invest in a country where the formal bailout fund is tapped dry, social security is tapped dry, and banks still have negative value?
At the end of the day, we all know how this mess will end: Spain will default which will suck several hundred billion Euros worth of collateral out of the system at which point we'll experience a Lehman-type event times ten.
What happens between then and now is anyone's guess. But the fact that Rajoy is admitting "there are no green shoots, there is no spring" indicates that things are likely about to get very ugly once again.
You can choose to ignore this and believe that Europe's Crisis is fixed just as EU political leaders claim. But Europe in general is out of options in terms of solving its debt crisis. The only thing that held things together in 2012 was the promise of unlimited bond buying by ECB President Mario Draghi... but then again this "buying" would only come with a formal request for a bailout, rampant austerity measures, and a look at the books for any country requesting it
Trust me, Spain doesn't want ANYONE taking a closer look at its books.
So if you have not already taken steps to prepare for systemic failure, you NEED to do so NOW. We're literally at most a few months, and very likely just a few weeks from Europe's banks imploding, potentially taking down the financial system with them. Think I'm joking? The Fed is pumping hundreds of BILLIONS of dollars into EU banks right now trying to stop this from happening.

A Syrian rebel commander has said on Wednesday that if the Lebanese political party Hezbollah does not cease the shelling of Free Syrian Army-controlled territories in Syria, it will face retaliation. The 48-hour deadline expires on Thursday.
The message came amid several other developments. Free Syrian Army (FSA) rebels shot down a Syrian fighter jet, following a government airstrike on a provincial town outside Damascus. Rebel commander General Selim Idriss told the AFP that “Hezbollah is abusing Lebanese sovereignty to shell Syrian territory and FSA positions.” He claims the shelling of villages in Syria’s Homs province is originating from the Bekaa valley in Lebanon, which the Syrian rebels will fire upon once the 48 hours are up. He added that his FSA fighters would bombard Hezbollah from different areas, as they are equipped with long-range weapons.
Idriss went on to say that the FSA appealed to the Lebanese President and PM, but their offices denied having any contact with the Syrian militants.
Lebanon remains split over Syria. Its Sunni-led government identifies with the rebel cause, while Shiite Hezbollah pledges support to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, though the party has denied sending fighters onto Syrian soil.
This double opposition is further complicated by Israel’s presence in the region, and its respective campaign against Hezbollah in southern Lebanon. Earlier on Wednesday, an Israeli drone was reportedly shot down near the Syrian border with Lebanon, according to Syrian news website Damas Post. Syrian forces reportedly shot down the Israeli unmanned aircraft over the Deir al Ashayer village near the Lebanese border. Neither Syrian nor Israeli officials have confirmed the report.

Malian authorities are investigating claims of torture, killings and reprisals by its own soldiers against minorities suspected of links to Islamist militants — accusations that threaten to jeopardize international support for fighting terrorism in the Sahara.
Malian Foreign Minister Tieman Coulibaly insisted to The Associated Press on Tuesday that his government is taking the allegations seriously and won't tolerate such "atrocities." But he acknowledges that it's a tough and sensitive task to investigate them in a poor, violence-scarred country with a weak, military-led government.
Concerns have mounted in recent weeks about abuses by Malian forces amid the French-led military campaign against al-Qaida-linked rebels who overran northern Mali last year. Arab and Tuareg families, minorities who are accused of having aided the rebels, are particularly afraid of reprisals.
The AP has documented a shallow grave where the bodies of two Arabs from Timbuktu were dumped — two men last seen alive being arrested by Malian forces. One of the last Arab residents of Timbuktu was picked up by Malian troops last week, the elderly man's hands bound and body trembling. The reason for his arrest and his whereabouts are unclear.
"The government will not tolerate atrocities. The government will not accept discrimination," Coulibaly said Tuesday in Paris.
He insisted the goal is to arrest suspected terrorists, not torture or kill them, and said that the lighter-skinned minorities in the north are not being unfairly targeted.
"We can't, in the name of avoiding discrimination, let an Arab or Tuareg go just because he's Arab or Tuareg, if he is guilty," he said.
He said four or five specific accusations are currently under investigation by Malian military authorities.

Chechen commander leads Muhajireen Brigade in Syria
"Chechen fighters," often described as fighters from the Caucasus and southern Russia, have been spotted on the Syrian battlefield for months. In October, a group of "Chechen emigrants" is known to have fought, along with an element from the Free Syrian Army unit, under the command of the Al Nusrah Front to take control of a key Syrian air defense and Scud missile base in Aleppo. The Long war Journal speculated at the time that the group included members of the Islamic Caucasus Emirate [see LWJ report, Al Nusrah Front commanded Free Syrian Army unit, 'Chechen emigrants,' in assault on Syrian air defense base].
The Muhajireen Group is known to have participated in two other major assaults against Syrian military bases since the October operation in Aleppo.
In mid-December, the Muhajireen Group teamed up with the Al Nusrah Front to overrun the Sheikh Suleiman base, or Base 111. Arab and Central Asian fighters are reported to have participated in the battle.
And last week, the Al Nusrah Front, together with the Tawhid Brigade and the Muhajireen Group, stormed the base of the Syrian military's 80th Regiment (or Brigade), which is situated near the main airport in Aleppo in eastern Syria.

53 people killed, over 200 injured in Damascus car bomb blast
At least 53 people have been killed and over 200 wounded in a massive car bomb blast that's hit the Syrian capital of Damascus, according to Syrian state TV. The explosion shook a square where pro-government rallies are usually staged.
The Syrian foreign ministry has blamed the attack on al-Qaeda linked "terrorist" groups. The opposition's Damascus media office says that the Free Syrian Army (FSA) has "denied responsibility for the blast and blamed it on the regime."
Police indicated that the victims were mostly civilians, including at least four children. Palestinian leader Nayef Hawatma was among the injured, AFP reported.
The car bombing occurred on a busy highway close to ruling Baath Party offices and the Russian Embassy. The blast caused damage to the nearby Abdullah Bin al-Zabir school and al-Hayat Hospital.

Israel 'officially allows' oil drilling in disputed Golan Heights
Israel has authorized drilling for oil on the disputed Golan Heights, local media report. The first license has been awarded to the US-Israeli energy company Genie (GNE).
The process of granting the license began following geological tests, which indicated a large potential oil discovery in the southern Golan Heights – an area of thousands of hectares. The license covers half the area of the Golan from the latitude of Katzrin in the north to Tzemach in the south.
Media tycoon Rupert Murdoch, former US Vice-President Dick Cheney and banker Jacob Rothschild are among the shareholders of GNE, a New Jersey-based company. It is headed by Effie Eitam, a Golan settler and former hardline rightwing Israeli cabinet minister.
Genie Energy is the parent company of Israel Energy Initiatives Ltd. (IEI), which is moving forward on a venture to develop shale oil deposits in the coastal plain.

UK may divert billions in foreign aid to military
David Cameron announced on Wednesday that he was ‘very open’ to the idea of channeling billions of pounds from the UK’s foreign aid budget in to military defense and ‘peacekeeping’ operations, in an attempt to avoid further defense cuts.
Money previously intended for overseas development and aid could be diverted into military operations deemed ‘peacekeeping’ by the British government. Funds from the Department for International Development (DFID) may be poured into the Ministry of Defense if the British PM has his way, and the idea is gaining momentum with the ruling party.
Cameron stated his interest in using foreign aid money for security purposes while reminding reporters that the department for international development already works closely with both the Foreign and Defense Ministries.
When the idea was broached on his visit to India, the PM replied, “Can we do more, can we build on this approach? I am very open to ideas like that. We also have our national security responsibilities for mending conflict states and helping with development around the world.”
Of the 46.3 billion pounds the UK spends on defense, 33.5 billion goes to the military, but in comparison, a mere 7 billion goes on foreign economic aid, according to 2013 statistics published on a UK public spending website.
Now, the given figure stands at 10 billion pounds, causing great unease amongst his Conservative MPs. Defense spending has fallen concurrently.
The decision to increase the DFID budget to 12 billion pounds by the next election has faced great criticism from UK taxpayers, who have seen cuts to a number of domestic services, such as health and social care. Further public service cuts of 10 billion pounds are expected, with 500-700 million pounds being sliced from defense.
